The Gerry Buccini Memorial Scholarship is a one-time gift of $500 that is open to
students pursuing either an education or music-related career once they have been accepted into an Alberta post-secondary institution.
Gerry Buccini
● Gerry Buccini was born December 3, 1947 in Calgary, AB. He grew up in Trail B.C., where he embraced sports, music and his Italian heritage. He was a standout
baseball player in his youth, playing championship-level Little League ball in the
early 1960s, senior ball later in the decade, and finally coaching in the St. Albert
minor leagues for several years.
● Gerry discovered a love of music early, joining the Trail Maple Leaf Band as a young and enthusiastic clarinetist. When the time came to attend the University of Alberta, he was convinced to bring along his instrument and join the school’s marching band.
As a new teacher in the St. Albert school system, Gerry was appointed President of the newly formed St. Albert Community Band – a position he maintained for over 40 years. Along the way he championed organizations like Hi-Q (later known as School Reach) while also teaching English and acting as William D. Cuts Junior High School’s Vice Principal. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Gerry served as Grand Knight of the St. Albert Council (4742) for several terms.
Gerry Buccini was a leader, a supporter and a builder, constantly developing
relationships and finding new connections within his community. The respect he earned from others was built on his naturally collaborative nature; he searched for ways to support others – and others recognized his sincerity and his selfless nature as signs of a capable leader. By building positive relationships and new connections, he helped build a stronger and richer community.
To honour Gerry Buccini and the many contributions he made to the City of St. Albert and the St. Albert Community Band, the Buccini family has established the Gerry Buccini Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is made possible through generous financial contributions from family and friends upon Gerry’s passing on June 1, 2022.
